Harry Potter and the half blood prince (2009)
The 6th instalment in the franchise, the films instantly darker, with death eaters attacking the public right off! And Harry Potter just sitting in a cafe, like nothings going on 😂 .
While this instalment is dark, with Voldemort plotting and death eaters trying to enter the school, with help from Draco Malfoy who made an unbreakable vow. Speaking of Malfoy, Tom Felton really shines in this film, he finally gets some decent screen time, and his character arc changes slightly, you can see how his upbringing may have affected his as he's scared shitless of been asked to kill Dumbledore, there is some respect there, but if he doesn't he's dead so the poor lad might be going through a lot. Not an excuse for his awful treatment of the other students but still, I feel a bit sorry for him.
While the death eaters are determined to kill Harry, attacking the burrow, and of course cohering Malfoy to help them, a nice side plot is the fact that these kids are now definitely teens and romance is a main theme of the film, Harry falling for Ginny, and Hermione's trust o be jealous, as Ron dates Lavender Brown, who is completely all over him all the time, which only fuels her anger, as she realises she might like Ron as more than a friend.
Of course the main upset in this film is the death of the great Albus Dumbledore, played brilliantly by the late Sir Michael Gambon. It's heartbreaking and so well done, setting up the last two instalments.
The trio's performance is great as always, Dan is hilarious and they really show their comedy skills in this while keeping it dark toned. It's a nice reprieve before the darkness of the next film.
