LITTLE WOMEN (2019)
See indepth look HERE.
Ok, Little Women lets get into this one. Firstly, i love this, i loved it so much i put the book on my reading list for our bookclub (Watson's Bookworms).
Ok, it is a bit up and down, the timeline throughout the film jumps back and forth and ahead, but it's not hard to follow thankfully. The story itself is adorable, empowering, and just pro-women really, it's feminist but contemporary, and keeps an air of light heartedness about it. Of course it has it's hard parts too, if you haven't seen this film or read the book, i will not spoil it for you, but i cried. If you've seen Friends and like me know every episode word for word you know exactly what i'm talking about as Rachel and Chandler reveal what happens in this book.
Back to the film, the setting is simply gorgeous. I find period films can be hard to watch, but this is just right, not too much, not too little. Some of the costumes are stunning and i find it a great shame that the only time a woman would dress close to this is her wedding day. Been allowed to vote and wear these beautiful ballgowns just didn't happen.
Besides Emma, there are some incredible actresses in this, the great Meryl Streep plays Aunt Marge and she kills it. And of course the one and only Laura Dern, who i have admired since Jurassic Park back in 1993. She is a powerhouse.
Ok, so onto Emma and her character Meg Marche. just to clarify this is a remake and though i usually despise them, i found this one respects the original with little changes, for which i'm grateful and happy to see. This does not happen often nowadays in remakes.
Meg is strong willed, a mother figure and eventually a mother and wife herself. Been a wife and mother i of course relate to Meg and her mother the most. I know how important it is to be a wife and mother, the responsibility of that, and the pain of sometimes wanting more for yourself, Meg wanted a new dress but could not afford it. She put her husband first, opting to sell the fabric.
but wait isn't Emma Watson a feminist? Well, yes she is, as am i and i'm here to tell you that choosing to be a wife and mother is not anti-feminist. We are afterall for gender equality, of course things were different in this time, but Meg seemed to keep a air of independence while wanting so badly for a happy ever after. I do not begrudge that, as again happy ever after, or been wooed by a man is not anti-feminist. I suppose nowadays some people have become confused and see married women as the enemy. As Jo tries to stop Meg from marrying and be an actress like she wanted. But dreams change, and it's ok tp accept that A line that Meg says summed it up for me and i loved it.
"Just because my dreams are different to your does not mean their not valid."
This statement is very Feminist to me, and she is right.
I loved all the girls, but aside from Meg i think Jo was my favourite for her sheer deviance at not conforming to society, and again this shows another side of feminism, each of the girls did it in their own way.
And i loved that. This is a film i hope to introduce my daughter to this film when she is older and can understand it.
Can't recommend this film enough, at just over 2 hours though i'd get comfy and go to the loo coz you'll be sat awhile.
Well done. That's all i can say.
