The Perks Of Been a Wallflower (2012)
The Perks of Been a Wallflower. Where do i start? Firstly, it has meaning for me, as i read the book when i was pregnant with my oldest and he's now 10 years old. I've read it multiple times since. It's one of my favourite books.
So, with that out of the way, here's the review of the film, which was directed by the author Stephen Chebosky. Ok, so This was Emma's 2nd film role after Potter, and it was a huge hit. Emma played Sam, a quirky school girl who holds a secret, and helps Charlie, who suffers PTSD after been sexually abused by his no deceased aunt, this isn't made clear in the film, it's subtly done, first time i watched it i had to look it up. I watched the film then read the book, yeh i know unheard of lol.
One of my fave scenes is when Charlie gets stoned, i've no actual experience in that area, but it's funny til Charlie reveals his friend committed suicide. This film goes from 0 too 100 real quick, in different tones, but it flows enough that it doesn't take you out of it. Logan Lerman plays Charlie perfectly. The tunnel scene is beautiful and Emma having filmed and done that stunt herself makes it even better. Sam is a complex character, like Charlie she was abused, and this connects them, though that connection isn't revealed til later. There's so many adult themes, abuse, drugs, the ongoing homophobia, and yet it's an incredibly uplifting film at the same time.
The dynamic between Sam and Charlie is adorable, and obvious, Emma has some of the best lines in this film, her American accent is well done, and she delivers her lines and character so well, you can't see Emma, you see Sam. Sometimes you can look at an actor and see the actor and not the character that's not the case atall here. Patrick is again a complex individual, and the prejudice he goes through is brilliantly done, and shows the still ongoing social issues in America and the worlds schools, when Sam gives Charlie the type writer, it's the sweetest thing.
Tackling issues that are today been made more prevalent is great to see, in the 90s where the story is set, that wasn't so much the case, and thing's were not looked into and brushed under the carpet.
The Rocky Horror part is amazing, although i've never really cared for the film itself, that sequence was brilliant, and Emma really went for it, as a whole it was very entertaining.
The whole Mary Elizabeth dating is so funny, it's endearing been terrified to break up with someone, and a bad way to do it, i don't mis been a teen and dating lol.
The fight was intense, the ending was even more intense and hard to watch, no matter how many times you watch it. This film is so immersive, and one of Emma's best.
Although i strongly recommend that you also read the book aswell as watch the film.
